A 5-Minute Hack to Keep Your Network Strong

Time to read: 4 mins

Reconnect.
Between work and managing your personal life, finding time to maintainan authentic and robust network can quickly fall to the bottom of the priority list.

Even so, your network requires regular attention. No excuses.

One easy way to keep your network strong is to retain relationships with people from previous roles or companies.

These are the people who know your work style and have seen your accomplishments. This dynamic puts them in a unique position to provide you with valuable insight and perspective when it comes to overcoming challenges or seizing opportunities.

Beyond that, these are the people who will be able to help you recruit for your team or recommend you for a role that aligns perfectly with your goals and interests.

Connecting with these old co-workers just to catch up is a great way to keep your relationships strong.

Today, take 5 minutes to send a message to two former co-workers.

Step 1. Identify two people to check in with. This could be your boss, someone on your team, or someone with whom you enjoyed having lunch with.

Step 2. Send them a message to meet up (i.e., coffee or lunch). You don’t need a reason to see them, but if there’s something you’d particularly like to get their thoughts on, that’s an added bonus.

Step 3. Make a note on your calendar to check in with a different coworker every few weeks. In this way, you can spread your efforts out over an extended period of time.
